Deadline: 14th November 2025 | Get up to USD 100K for research that improves the lives of wild animals.

Overview
The Wild Animal Initiative Challenge Grants support large-scale, high-impact research on wild animal welfare. These multi-year grants are for experienced researchers aiming to push the boundaries of this emerging field—perfect for academics or institutions looking to explore questions beyond traditional conservation.

Eligibility:
• Lead applicant must be an established researcher affiliated with a university or institution
• Projects can be new or add a welfare-focused angle to existing research
• Early-career collaborators are welcome, but the project must be led by a senior investigator
• Research must focus directly on wild animal welfare (not just conservation or ecology)
• Proposals should align with WAI priority areas like interspecies interactions, fish or invertebrate welfare, mortality causes, or ecological system dynamics

Description:
This grant funds in-depth, multi-year research (up to 5 years) with budgets typically between USD 50,000 and USD 100,000. Projects should offer clear insights into how wild animals experience their environments and how their welfare can be better understood or improved. Strong proposals will demonstrate scientific rigour and contribute broadly to the field.

Benefits:
• Substantial funding to support high-quality research
• Opportunity to include support for postdocs or PhD students
• Join a growing global movement focused on animal welfare science
• Visibility, reporting, and impact tracking through the Wild Animal Initiative
