The World Conference of Science Journalists 2027 Travel Fellowship supports journalists, media professionals, students and selected researchers or educators who would otherwise be unable to attend WCSJ2027 because of limited funding. The fellowship provides substantial travel and participation support for the conference, which will bring hundreds of science journalists and communicators together in London.

Eligibility:

  • Open internationally.
  • Journalists and other media professionals covering science and related areas such as engineering, climate and health may apply; science journalism does not need to be their primary profession.
  • Eligible applicants include staff journalists, freelancers and professionals working across print, online, broadcast, audio and other media.
  • Students studying science journalism, journalism, media studies, science communication or related fields may apply.
  • Researchers and teachers in journalism, media studies or science communication may also apply if they have a demonstrated track record as a journalist, author or media producer.
  • Student applicants must be of legal age in their home country and able to travel independently.
  • Applicants should demonstrate genuine financial need and limited access to funding from their employer, institution or other sources.
  • Applicants must be available for the full fellowship period from 6–10 September 2027.
  • Applicants must hold a passport valid until at least the end of September 2027, or provide evidence that an application or renewal is in progress.
  • Applications must be completed in English. Work originally produced in another language may be accompanied by an English translation.

Description:

The World Conference of Science Journalists 2027 will take place at Central Hall Westminster in London, with the main conference running from 6–9 September 2027 under the theme “Strengthening science journalism through global networks.” Travel Fellows must be available through 10 September.

Hosted by the Association of British Science Writers and the World Federation of Science Journalists, WCSJ2027 will bring together journalists, writers and communicators from around the world for professional development workshops, keynote sessions, discussions on journalism and emerging areas of science, field trips, reporting opportunities and international networking.

Travel Fellowship applicants are assessed on their professional experience, commitment to science journalism, motivation for attending, potential professional benefit and contribution, plans for sharing what they learn, quality of previous work and financial need. The organisers also aim to create a geographically diverse and internationally representative cohort.

Applicants need to provide a CV or résumé, a professional biography, at least three examples of relevant work from the past two years and a supporting letter from an employer, editor, educational institution or relevant professional association. They must also explain what they hope to gain from WCSJ2027 and how they will share the knowledge afterwards.

Successful applicants are expected to be notified by the end of February 2027.
