The Youth for Sustainable Policy Global Policy Brief Competition 2026 is a global writing competition for young people interested in climate policy, energy, sustainability, governance and public policy. Participants are invited to produce a concise, evidence-based policy brief analysing whether a recent fossil fuel subsidy reform worked and recommending a realistic way to improve it.

Eligibility:

  • Open globally to young people aged 16–30.
  • Secondary and high school students can enter under the Junior category.
  • University students, recent graduates and young professionals can enter under the Open category.
  • No previous policy-writing experience is required.
  • Applicants may come from a range of academic and professional backgrounds.

Description:

Participants must submit a research-backed policy brief of 600–900 words.
The brief should select one fossil fuel subsidy reform implemented in any country within the past five years, evaluate its effectiveness and recommend one improvement that a national government could adopt by 2030.
Submissions will be assessed on the quality of the argument, use of evidence, accessibility of the writing and practicality of the policy recommendation.
The competition forms part of YSP’s Research & Policy and Environment work and is designed to help emerging researchers and policy enthusiasts practise translating evidence into clear, actionable recommendations.
The submission deadline is 15 October 2026 at 11:59 PM GMT+8. A policy brief template and YSP style guide are also available from the organiser.
