The European Southern Observatory Fellowship Programme supports early-career researchers in astronomy, physics and related fields to strengthen their scientific profile and prepare for the next stage of their research careers. Fellowships are available in Germany and Chile, combining independent research with hands-on involvement in ESO’s scientific and observatory activities.
Eligibility:
- Open to applicants internationally.
- Applicants must have obtained, or expect to obtain, a PhD in astronomy, physics or a related discipline before 1st November 2027.
- Early-career researchers from all areas of astrophysics are encouraged to apply.
- Observational, theoretical and computational astrophysics backgrounds are all eligible.
- Applicants should be capable of developing an independent research programme and contributing to a collaborative international scientific environment.
- Applicants do not need to secure separate admission to a university programme.
Description:
Fellowships are based either at ESO Headquarters in Garching near Munich, Germany, or at ESO’s astronomy centre in Santiago, Chile.
The Germany fellowship lasts three years. Fellows devote most of their time to independent research while spending around 25% of their time on functional work connected with ESO projects and scientific activities.
The Chile fellowship lasts four years. During the first three years, fellows combine research with duties supporting facilities such as ALMA or the Very Large Telescope. The fourth year is dedicated entirely to research and may be spent at ESO or at an eligible astronomy or astrophysics institute.
Applicants must submit a motivation letter, research plan and academic and research track record using ESO’s official templates. Three referees are also required.
