To encourage young leaders to talk about sustainable and inclusive tourism issues and to create space and dialogue among young people to strengthen their networks and communities across Southeast Asia. Moreover, selected participants will have support in developing and implementing relevant projects after the workshop through a small grant mechanism and follow-on mentoring.

The Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) is a highly competitive cultural exchange program for Southeast Asian emerging leaders launched by former President Barack Obama. The initiative aims to strengthen leadership development, networking, and cultural exchange among emerging leaders from ASEAN member-states and Timor Leste.

YSEALI programs fall under the key core themes of civic engagement, sustainable development, economic development, and the environment.

Program Dates August 18-23, 2024 – (inclusive of travel dates)

Participant Eligibility and Selection Criteria
Applicants should:
• Demonstrate strong leadership qualities and potential in their university, place of work, and/or community;
• Demonstrate interest, knowledge, or professional experience in one or more YSEALI workshop themes (cultural heritage preservation; sustainable and inclusive cultural tourism; socially responsible business practices; entrepreneurship);
• Demonstrate a commitment to or interest in community service, volunteerism, or mentorship;
• Indicate a serious interest in learning and sharing;
• Be willing to actively participate in classroom activities, onsite learning, collaborative work, and networking;
• Commit to return to their home country to apply leadership skills and training to benefit their community, country, or the region of Southeast Asia.

Applicants must be:
• Between the ages of 18 and 35 at the time of application;
• A citizen of one of the following countries: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor Leste, or Vietnam;
• A resident of one of the following countries: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor Leste, or Vietnam;
• Not a U.S. citizen or permanent resident of the U.S.; and,
• Proficient in written and spoken English. (Note: No TOEFL, IELTS, or other test score is required. English language ability is evaluated through the application form and video submitted).
