Deadline: 27th June 2025 | Get global recognition for your work in advancing literacy—UNESCO is awarding $20,000 to five outstanding initiatives.

The UNESCO International Literacy Prizes 2025 honour innovative projects that support literacy development around the world. If you’re leading a programme that improves reading, writing, or digital skills—especially in underserved communities—this is a chance to gain international visibility and funding.

Eligibility:

  • Open to governments, NGOs, and individuals

  • Projects must have a proven track record in literacy promotion

  • Must be nominated by a National Commission for UNESCO or an NGO in official partnership with UNESCO

There are two categories:
UNESCO King Sejong Literacy Prize – for projects focused on mother-language literacy.
UNESCO Confucius Prize for Literacy – for efforts benefiting rural youth and adults, particularly using technology.
Five winners will be selected, with a focus on impact, innovation, and sustainability.

Benefits:

  • $20,000 USD cash prize for each laureate

  • A diploma and public recognition

  • Invitation to the official award ceremony on International Literacy Day (8 September)

How to Apply:

  • Contact your country’s National Commission for UNESCO to express interest

  • Fill out the online application form (requires endorsement by a nominating body)

  • Application and nomination must be submitted via the UNESCO platform by 10 July 2025
