In celebration of the momentous 50th Year of ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation, the ASEAN Foundation and ASEAN-Japan Center proudly present the highly anticipated ASEAN Foundation Model ASEAN Meeting Plus Japan 2023 (AFMAM Plus Japan 2023) in Jakarta, Indonesia. The ASEAN Foundation is organising its special edition of the ASEAN Foundation Model ASEAN Meeting plus Japan 2023 (AFMAM + Japan 2023) to coincide with the ASEAN – Japan 50 Years Anniversary.
The AFMAM Plus Japan 2023 promises an authentic experience to understand ASEAN. With aims of advancing the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific and enhancing ASEAN diplomacy within the ASEAN and Japan, the programme will provide participants with an invaluable education experience with vast improvements in decision-making skills and knowledge on ASEAN and Japan affairs.
It is an interactive process where you will role-play a senior official of an ASEAN meeting and simulate how an ASEAN senior official engages in various ASEAN meetings. You will understand how ASEAN as an inter-governmental system works and will learn about the decision-making process to understand how regional agreements and cooperation are cultivated. It will be an interesting and enjoyable experience!
What will I get?
- The programme will be fully funded by the organisers. Includes round trip from city of the country of origin to Jakarta, Indonesia, accommodation and meals.
- Enables you to understand ASEAN diplomacy and how decision-makers of the ASEAN Member States address regional issues by involving in the authentic simulation exercises.

The AFMAM Plus Japan 2023 will be held in Jakarta, Indonesia on-site on the week of 6 – 9 November 2023 in the ASEAN Secretariat, Jakarta, Indonesia with the following details as follows:

How?
The following qualifications are eligible to apply:
- Enrolled as a student of tertiary education institution taking diploma or undergraduate studies (or equivalent level) from any disciplines at education institutions in the ASEAN Member States and Japan when the programme takes place.
- Between 18 and 25 years of age when the programme takes place.
- English proficient, verbal and written.
- Ability to actively participate in the full duration of the programme, including the pre-conference online training (see the AFMAM Plus Japan timeline above).
Below are the required documents you need to prepare before applying:
- Personal data.
- Full face photo in soft copy (please ensure your file is in JPG or JPEG format and does not exceed 500 KBs).
- Letter of Recommendation from respective department/faculty/university/education institution for each person (please ensure that your file is in PDF format and does not exceed 500 KBs). This is written in free format on letterhead paper signed by authorised official of your institution verifying: Name, department, faculty, and the current semester you are at.
- List of 5 (five) most noteworthy your personal achievements (please share not more than 5 achievements briefly and concisely, do not write a CV).
- An individual essay that addresses the following questions in no more than 800 words:
- What does ASEAN mean to you? How do you think youth meaningfully engage with the region’s development and create impact?
- How can we move forward with the 50th Year of ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation: Golden Partnership, Golden Opportunities?
- What is one important ASEAN regional issue that needs to be addressed at the ASEAN-Japan level? What are some solutions that you would propose to resolve this issue?
