The Inspiring Women in Science awards acknowledge and celebrate the accomplishments of women in science and those who encourage girls and young women to engage with STEM subjects and remain in STEM careers worldwide. Two award categories are open for applications – Science Outreach and Scientific Achievement. The awards, presented in partnership with The Estée Lauder Companies, aim to recognize women in science and individuals who support women in STEM careers. STEM includes natural sciences, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine.

The Nature Awards for Inspiring Women in Science – Science Outreach Category is presented to initiatives that increase the retention of women in STEM careers or support girls and young women to engage with STEM subjects. These initiatives can be run by academic, educational, charitable, governmental, or corporate entities. However, for corporate entities, the initiatives should be part of a corporate social responsibility program and not a part of core commercial operations.

The Nature Awards for Inspiring Women in Science – Scientific Achievement Category recognizes early-career women researchers who have made exceptional contributions to scientific discovery, faced significant personal or professional challenges, and have the potential for developing and leading an independent research group. The applicants must have also made efforts to inspire the next generation of scientists through outreach or support the retention of women in science careers.

The benefits of these awards include a prize of US$50,000, an invitation to the award ceremony in London with all travel and accommodation expenses covered by the organizers. Coverage on nature.com, an invitation to present their work or initiative to the scientists at The Estée Lauder Companies, mentoring through The Estée Lauder Companies, and access to an exclusive mentoring and networking community site.

Applicants must self-identify as women, hold a PhD degree, a medical degree, or other types of doctorate by dissertation, and be within ten years of completing their degree. Applicants who have taken maternity leave or other relevant leaves of absence will receive an extension of ten years. Those in a tenured position are not eligible to apply. The awards accept applications from individuals working in natural sciences, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine, including interdisciplinary components.
