Deadline: 1st July 2023 | Supporting journalists working on in-depth AI accountability stories that examine governments’ and corporations’ uses of predictive and surveillance technologies to guide decisions in policing, medicine, social welfare, the criminal justice system, hiring, and more.
Do you want to report on how artificial intelligence is shaping our society and affecting our lives? Do you have a compelling story idea that exposes the hidden impacts of algorithms on policy, individuals, and communities? Do you want to join a network of journalists who are passionate about holding governments and corporations accountable for their use of AI technologies?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you should apply for the AI Accountability Fellowships! These are grants for journalists who want to broaden, deepen, and diversify reporting on artificial intelligence with an accountability lens. The Fellowships are open to journalists from all beats, desks, and formats who have a reporting project they wish to pursue during the 10-month Fellowship period. The Fellows will receive up to $20,000 to cover their reporting expenses and stipends, as well as access to mentors and training with a group of peers. The deadline for applications is July 1, 2023.
The Fellowship is designed to support journalists and newsrooms that represent the diversity of the communities affected by AI technologies. The Fellowship encourages enterprise and accountability projects that use a variety of approaches—including data analysis, records requests, and shoe-leather reporting—to delve into the real-world impact of algorithms on issues such as policing, medicine, social welfare, the criminal justice system, hiring, and more.
In its first year, the Fellowship supported 10 Fellows reporting in 10 countries. The 2022 cohort of AI Accountability Fellows reported on themes crucial to equity and human rights, such as the impact of AI on the gig economy, social welfare, policing, migration, and border control.
Don’t miss this opportunity to join a community of journalists who are committed to investigating and exposing the hidden consequences of AI technologies. Apply now and make your voice heard!
