Deadline: 15th January 2026 | Conduct research in the U.S. on topics that deepen U.S.–ASEAN cooperation

Overview
The Fulbright U.S.–ASEAN Visiting Scholar Initiative offers university faculty, government officials, and professionals from ASEAN countries—including Brunei—the chance to spend 3 to 4 months in the United States in early 2027. Scholars will conduct research on topics relevant to ASEAN priorities and the U.S.–ASEAN relationship.

Eligibility
• Open to citizens of ASEAN countries
• Applicants must reside in an ASEAN country during the application and return after the grant
• For university faculty, government officials, and professionals from think tanks or NGOs
• Must have a strong record of academic or professional achievement
• Must be proficient in English
• Preference given to applicants without recent U.S. experience

Description
Up to 22 scholars (around two per ASEAN country) will be selected. Scholars are expected to focus primarily on research while also building long-term academic or professional relationships. Grantees may give lectures, attend seminars, or participate in conferences while in the U.S. Applicants are encouraged to identify and secure letters of invitation from U.S. host institutions, though it’s not mandatory at the application stage.

Qualifying fields include public health, education, maritime cooperation, economic integration, AI policy, food technology, law, journalism, trade, and other areas aligned with ASEAN priorities.

• Monthly stipend of USD $2,710–$3,145
• Round-trip economy airfare
• One-time USD $1,250 professional and settling-in allowance
• Lab or research fees up to USD $3,000 (if needed)
• Exchange duration: 3 to 4 months
• Note: No funding for dependents
