Deadline; 30th September 2024 | Equipping early- to mid-career journalists with training, mentoring, and story grants to report on infrastructure development and its environmental and human rights impacts. Journalists will learn strategies to mitigate physical and digital risks during their reporting. The program includes a hybrid workshop in November 2024 (10 hours online and two days in-person) and subsequent story grants, aiming to strengthen participants’ ability to produce impactful stories while adhering to a Do No Harm approach.
Overview: The STRIDES project supports in-depth environmental reporting on infrastructure development in Southeast Asia, emphasizing transparency and accountability. The fellowship offers training in infrastructure reporting and safety, followed by story grants to enable thorough coverage of infrastructure projects and their effects on vulnerable communities.
Story Themes: We seek stories on the environmental and human rights impacts of infrastructure development, with a focus on illegal logging, mining, and unplanned projects. We also encourage solutions-focused stories highlighting efforts to mitigate these threats.
Fellowship Logistics: Sixteen journalists will be selected in October 2024, with training in November 2024. Participants will engage with trainers, access an online knowledge portal, and apply for story grants. Each fellow will produce at least one story, with mentorship from an EJN senior journalist.
Eligibility: Applicants must be from Malaysia, Brunei, Timor Leste, Indonesia, Singapore, or the Philippines, have at least two years of relevant reporting experience, and be proficient in English. We encourage applications from women, Indigenous journalists, and those committed to attending all workshop days.
Judging Criteria: Applications will be assessed on relevance, angle, impact, innovative storytelling, and the plan for timely publication.
Language and Safety: Stories can be produced in local languages but must also be available in English. Journalists should adhere to safety best practices, and published stories must acknowledge EJN support.
