The APEX Awards 2027 support established independent researchers who want to take their work in a new direction through cross-disciplinary collaboration. The scheme brings together the British Academy, Royal Academy of Engineering and Royal Society, with support from the Leverhulme Trust.

Eligibility:

  • Open to established independent researchers with a strong research track record
  • Applicants must be based at a UK university or not-for-profit research institution for at least the duration of the project
  • Researchers may come from engineering, the sciences, humanities or social sciences
  • Proposed research must span the remit of more than one of the three Academies
  • Applicants are expected to work with a co-applicant from a different discipline or a different UK university

Description:

APEX — the Academies Partnership in Supporting Excellence in Cross-disciplinary Research — funds ambitious, curiosity-driven projects that bring together expertise from different academic disciplines.

The programme is designed for research that may not fit neatly within conventional funding schemes, particularly projects crossing the boundaries between science, engineering, humanities and social sciences.

Successful projects must begin between 1st October and 31st December 2027 and can run for up to 24 months.

Benefits:

  • Up to £200,000 in research funding
  • Funding can support teaching and administrative relief for applicants and co-applicants
  • Staff costs can include research assistants, technicians, research staff and undergraduate, Master’s or PhD students
  • Up to 25% of the award can support research costs such as equipment, consumables and collaborative travel
  • Up to £10,000 can be included for public engagement activities
  • Opportunity to develop a major interdisciplinary collaboration and take established research in a new direction
