The Getty Conservation Guest Scholars Program supports established researchers and practitioners in cultural heritage conservation to pursue focused research at the Getty Conservation Institute in Los Angeles. It is designed for experienced professionals with a strong record in the field who want dedicated time, resources and an international scholarly community to develop work with practical value for conservation.

Eligibility:

  • Open to applicants of all nationalities.
  • Applicants must work in cultural heritage conservation or preservation, including areas such as objects, collections, architecture and sites.
  • Applicants should have at least seven years of professional experience.
  • Applicants should have an established record of publications and other contributions to the conservation field.
  • Research proposed as part of a PhD, postdoctoral project or other academic degree is not eligible.
  • Previous Conservation Guest Scholar Grant recipients may reapply after a six-year waiting period.
  • Current Getty staff and their immediate family members are not eligible.
  • There is no stated age limit.

Description:

Selected scholars undertake a three-month residency at the Getty Conservation Institute in Los Angeles, United States. Residency periods are available from September to December, January to March, or April to June during the 2027–2028 programme cycle.

Scholars pursue their own research projects independently and free from their usual work obligations. They can use research collections at the Getty Center and Getty Villa and participate in the wider intellectual community of Getty alongside other scholars, fellows and interns.

Proposals should bring new knowledge or perspectives to cultural heritage conservation and demonstrate a clear methodology, expected outcomes, contribution to professional practice and a strong reason for carrying out the research at Getty.
