Deadline: 1st September 2022 | How can we clean up our oceans? The Youth Innovation Challenge (YIC) gives young people (ages 15–30) around the world a chance to come up with innovative solutions to a pressing environmental issue affecting our marine ecosystems, using environmental education as a key strategy. We are looking for solutions that are innovative, feasible, and informed by research. Winning solutions will receive global recognition and a $1,000 USD prize!

Overview of the Youth Innovation Challenge

Discarded fishing lines. Millions of tons of plastic waste. Our oceans are filled with debris of all kinds—from floating trash to microplastics to litter scattered across the ocean floor—and this pollution has significant impacts on our marine ecosystems, environment, and even public health. But these are all things we can address together through the power of science, innovation, and education.

The Youth Innovation Challenge (YIC) provides an opportunity for young people around the world to share their innovative solutions to marine debris, a pressing environmental issue affecting our marine ecosystems—from our oceans and coasts to our rivers and lakes. Marine debris includes human-created materials that pollute our waterways and cause harm, whether intentional or unintentional, to marine ecosystems. The 2022 Youth Innovation Challenge (YIC) is all about how we can address marine debris and empower people to be engaged stewards for marine environments.

Are you 15–30 years old and have an idea to solve marine debris at the local, national, or regional level? We want to hear from you! We’re looking for solutions that you could implement on your own or in partnership with other individuals or organizations. Your solution must align with one or more of the following
key priority areas, and should also include an environmental education (EE) component (see Selection Criteria for more information about EE):

-Monitoring & Investigation of the amount, type, and distribution of marine debris.
-Cleanup of both floating debris and bottom litter in the ocean. • Recycle & Reuse marine debris into useful products.
-Engaging Communities to address marine debris issues.

A total of 15 YIC finalists will receive a Youth Innovation Challenge certificate and receive global recognition on GEEP and NAAEE platforms. In addition, 3 of the 15 finalists will be chosen as winners and will receive a $1,000 USD prize.
