Deadline: 12th July 2024 | Inviting youth from ASEAN, Timor-Leste and Australia to discuss and brainstorm on improving ASEAN-Australia ties for the future. The theme of the program is ‘50 Years of ASEAN-Australia Dialogue Relations: A Partnership for the Future’.

The ASEAN Foundation, with the Australian Mission to ASEAN, invites youth from ASEAN, Timor-Leste, and Australia to the ASEAN Foundation Model ASEAN Meeting Plus Australia 2024 (AFMAM Plus Australia 2024). The event will be held in Jakarta, Indonesia, from 10-14 September 2024.

The program aims to provide these students an authentic experience to understand ASEAN-Australia relations, as well as to enhance essential skills and knowledge, particularly on global awareness, cross-cultural skills, critical and inventive thinking, negotiation, public speaking, consensus-building. In addition, the extension of friendship circles across ASEAN and beyond also paves the way for people-to-people links and pursuing a partnership for the future.

During the program, you will participate in a series of activities:

  1. Pre-Conference Online Training: The online training for delegates is designed to ensure that the delegates attending the AFMAM Plus Australia 2024 have a certain degree of knowledge competence on ASEAN, the themes and topics, and foreign policy.
  2. In-Conference Training: On the first day of the conference, delegates would undergo training/informal consultation sessions to prepare them for further committee sessions. The sessions during the in-conference training cover information on a) Understanding the ASEAN Secretariat and Chair role; b) Protocols on Chairing and Facilitating; and c) Developing and Amending the Chair’s Statement.
  3. The AFMAM Plus Australia 2024: As the main event of the program, the AFMAM Plus Australia 2024 Conference will provide an avenue for delegates to experience a role as high-level ASEAN and Australian officials and partake in a series of ASEAN and ASEAN Plus meetings, leading to an Outcome Document which will be signed upon completion of the Program.

  • Program History & Format: AFMAM began in 2015 and has been held annually, except for 2020-2021. This year includes Australian participants.
  • Objectives: Enhance understanding of ASEAN-Australia relations, develop decision-making and diplomacy skills, and foster cross-cultural links.
  • Activities: Pre-conference online training, in-conference training, and main conference simulating high-level ASEAN meetings.
  • Eligibility: Open to tertiary students (18-25 years old) from ASEAN, Timor-Leste, and Australia, proficient in English.
  • Application: Apply from 1-12 July 2024 with necessary documents (photo, passport/ID, recommendation letter, achievements list, essay).
