Deadline: 9th April 2024 | Offering 3-4 grants to organizations averaging 10,000-12,000 EUR each to support activities that strengthen media reporting on biodiversity issues.
Biodiversity Crisis Overview
Biodiversity is rapidly declining due to factors like habitat loss and exploitation, posing threats to climate regulation, food, water, and more. International efforts, such as the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, aim to combat this by setting non-binding conservation goals for nations, emphasizing the critical role of media in raising awareness and ensuring accountability.
EJN Biodiversity Media Grants
The Earth Journalism Network (EJN) is offering grants to projects aimed at improving media coverage of biodiversity. These grants will support in-depth reporting, journalist training, and the development of networks focused on biodiversity and conservation, with a special focus on projects that align with the Kunming-Montreal Framework’s objectives, particularly in low- and middle-income countries.
Grant Details
Grants ranging from €10,000 to €12,000 will be awarded to 3-4 organizations, with preference given to proposals that are innovative and demonstrate cost-effectiveness. Projects are expected to start in May 2024 and conclude by April 2025. Applicants must provide a detailed budget, with the possibility of allocating a portion for essential equipment. Co-financing is encouraged, and EJN will have rights to edit and distribute any published content.
Eligibility and Selection Criteria
Eligible applicants include journalist networks, media organizations, civil societies, and academic institutions from low- or middle-income countries, with a preference for projects in biodiversity-rich areas or locations previously unsupported by EJN. Projects focused on advocacy or political campaigning will not be considered. Applications must be in English and will be evaluated based on quality, relevance, impact, innovation, cost-effectiveness, and the applicant’s capability to execute the project. Transparency regarding the use of AI in proposal development is required.
